Championship bracket set for
VISD Spikefest

Even though one team failed to show it didnt put a damper on
the annual Victoria ISD Spikefest volleyball
tournament.
Laredo United was a no-show and caused the
teams -Memorial and Goliad - to come up a game short in pool play, but both
teams managed to get in a second game. Memorial took on Schulenburg and Goliad
went against the Memorial JV to get in an extra game after both had qualified
for Saturdays championship bracket with the Laredo United forfeits.
Yoakum, Hallettsville and Palacios won their
respective pools, along with Memorial and go into Saturdays bracket play as
the top seeds. Play begins Saturday at the Memorial senior campus gym at 9 a.m.
Blue Pool
Yoakum captured its pool with a 26-24, 25-22
win over St. Joseph and a hard-fought 24-26, 28-26, 25-22 win over Schulenburg.
Briana Palvicek had
20 kills and 12 digs, while Ariel Machacek added 13
kills to lead Yoakum.
Schulenburg went on to take second in pool
play with a 25-17, 25-19 win over St. Joseph.
White Pool
Hallettsville, last years runner-up, showed
it was ready to challenge for the title again after turning back Calhoun 25-10,
25-6 and the Memorial JV 25-19, 25-18.
Kelly Hairell
recorded 16 kills and served up 12 points for Hallettsville, while Callie
Herrington had 40 assists and 11 service points.
Calhoun fought off the Memorial JV 25-23,
16-25, 25-14 to claim second place in the pool.
Black Pool
Brittany Stafford, Sam Alvarez and Bianca
Trevino combined for 12 kills to lead Memorial to a 25-11, 25-21 win over
Goliad to win its pool.
Memorial later defeated Schulenburg 26-24,
25-20 in an extra game. Stafford finished with seven kills and Katie Lytle added
five in the win.
White Pool
Palacios downed Cuero 27-25, 25-20 and
Hallettsville Sacred Heart 25-12, 25-9 to take the top spot in its pool.
Cuero took the runner-up spot with a
25-18-25-18 win over Sacred Heart.
