State Volleyball Poll
September 8, 2008

Welcome to the Fall 2008 volleyball season to coaches, fans, players, officials and aficionados. This is the first poll which is limited to just a top ten in each classification. The polls are not an official ranking that is handled on the court in November. This poll is open to comments, criticisms and input from all. The poll is an attempt to stimulate conversation about the sport and is edited to promote the participants, coaches, schools and officials. Please feel me to email me as often as you would like on input. The pre-season poll is top ten, after one week the poll is expanded to top 15 then initially to a top 25 per classification.
Thanks and looking forward to a great season

Comments: White Oak keeps on rolling as the Ladynecks beat 4A Hallsville, then won the Shirley Atkins Tournament over the weekend beating Carthage, Gladewater and Ore City on Thursday and then beat North Lamar, Crandall and Quitman Saturday. White Oak is currently 24-1 on the season and has won six straight tournament championships dating back to last season. WO has won 65 out of their last 68 matches. WO is led by 6"0 freshman hitter Abbey Bybel, returning All-State setter Natalie Craven and sophomore Morgan Wilson. Bybel is the younger sister of last yrs senior All-State hitter Emily Bybel. Pottsboro had an impressive showing at the Whitesboro tournament beating Denson, Gainesville and Texoma Christian to improve to 17-3 on the season. Reagan Hayes led the way with 32 kills while Courtni Bauer added 29 kills in the three wins. Pottsboro came back last weekend won the Whitesboro Invitational Tournament Champions beating Celina 25-19, 25-15, Sanger 25-16, 26-24 and Gunter 25-23, 25-19 in the championship. Courtni Bauer was named Tournament MVP, and Reagan Hayes earned All-Tournament. Pottsboro is 21-3 on the season. Centerville opened district by beating Onalaska 25-5, 25-11, 25-11. Hallettsville slammed Yoakum 25-15, 25-21, 25-11 while Schulenburg beat Industrial three games to one. Arp beat Texarkana Pleasant Grove but lost to Groesbeck. Poth is 7-11 as the Pirettes continue to take their lumps from 4A and 5a powers but watch out now that district is here. Rogers won the Robinson tournament to improve to 20-1 and is likely to have a barn burner with Salado in district 25. Harmony continues to struggle with adjustments to graduation losses. Still looking to find their tempo Nocona beat Peaster. Crawford was 5-1 at the Robinson tournament losing only to Rogers. Hallettsville is 17-3 after beating Yoakum.

Comments: Wimberley and Lovejoy are early favorite for a re-match in the state tournament as the defending champion Texans continue to hammer all but the top elite big schools behind the attacks of Katie Milam and Lovejoy pounds away looking for a re-match of the loss to Wimberley in the lady Texans tournament earlier in the season. Bellville beat 5A Katy Taylor 25-18, 25-22, 23-25, 21-25, 16-14 as Alexia Ignasiak had 28 kills and Alyssa Murphy added 15 kills. Bellville blasted Caldwell 25 - 8, 27-25, 25-23 as Ignasiak finished with 19 kills. Wharton is playing well beating Palacios but losing to Columbus en route to a 13-6 record. Argyle improve to 19-6 with a 3-1 in over Pilot Point while Prosper won the Argyle tournament beating Argyle 3-2, Aubrey 3-2, Celina 3-0 and Wichita Falls. Argyle improved to 20-6 with a win at Bowie 25-15, 25-21, 23-25, 25-20. Bonham swept 4A opponents Sherman and Greenville. Bellville beat both Wallis Brazos and East Bernard . Gatesville split with Groesbeck, losing in four games and beating Liberty Hill who then beat Groesbeck. Gatesville is 18-7 on the season.

Comments: Hutto, who lost to Brenham to open the year then blasted the Cubettes in the Fraulein Volleyfest and Lake Travis, who was second to Bishop Lynch at the Hays Lady Rebel Bash are both playing well in Central Texas while Randall beat a strong Monahans team and the district race out west with Randall, Hereford, Dumas and Canyon means a really good team won't even make playoffs. Dripping Springs beat both San Marcos and Wimberley. Steele beat Poth while Highland Park is playing well as are the dazzling powers of West Texas- Hereford, Canyon Randall and Dumas. Highland Park beat Wylie and Plano East.

Comments: I know that talk is cheap but for a top four teams I think that district 26-5A is certainly one of if not the toughest district in the state with Reagan, Churchill, New Braunfels and Smithson Valley. They will not be a good playoff draw, not any of them. Dickinson is 22-2 after Kylee Hawkins slammed nine kills to spark a win over Houston Westside 25-11, 25-10 but Cedar Park owned the Dickinson tournament by beating the hosts in the finals. Churchill beat Reagan and edged New Braunfels while Reagan recovered to beat Lee and O'Connor smoked Seguin. Lake Highlands was impressive in beating Marcus while Clear Creek still is on top in Houston despite the tournament title over the weekend by The Woodlands at Kingwood. Amarillo is still not to be trifled with as the Sandies have just three losses and are already in their playoff run. Westlake beat a strong Dripping Springs team while Round Rock crushed Austin Bowie.
