2009 Texas Girls Coaches Association Volleyball Poll
August 3, 2009 - Pre-Season Top Ten

                            Class 1A

1.

Windthorst

2.

Cayuga

3.

Yorktown

4.

Bronte

5.

Normangee

6.

Leakey

7.

Flatonia

8.

Albany

9.

Round Top Carmine

10.

Sterling City

Comments: The Trojanettes are extremely good and traditional champions.  There are several strong teams but none that have demonstrated the big match strength of Windthorst.  Albany had a strong run and should be good while Shiner, despite graduation losses, and Cayuga are contenders.  Iola graduated the core that saw them as repeat visitors to the state tournament while traditional power Round Top Carmine appears ready for a good run.

Class 2A

1.

Bushland

2.

Wallis Brazos

3.

Pottsboro

4.

Jewett Leon

5..

White Oak

6.

Peaster

7.

Centerville

8.

Grandview

9.

Rogers

10.

Denver City

Comments: Despite coaching changes, Bushland appears the team to beat while Wallis Brazos and Pottsboro are talented.  Jason Evans, who built Centerville into a state power has gone down the road to Leon where his grandfather, the legendary Billy Evans, won seven state titles and over 1,000 matches.  Jason Evans is a talented coach and Leon is a program that looks ready to re-gain the crown,  but the cupboard is not empty at Centerville while Quitman is well coached, White Oaks is tall and Rogers is athletic while Denver City has put together a solid squad..

Class 3A

1.

Lucas Lovejoy

2.

Brownwood

3.

Bellville

4.

Dalhart

5.

Fredericksburg

6.

Hamshire-Fannett

7.

Wimberley

8.

Prosper

9.

Columbus

10.

Monahans

Comments: The bad news for 3A teams is that Lovejoy looked great while winning state last year and the worse news is that they did not have any seniors on that team.  Brownwood had several seniors but return their outside attack while Dalhart and Bellville should re-load.  Fredericksburg looks very good and teams with Wimberley to make for an interesting race in district 8.  Monahans looks to get stronger and will be among the lead teams in Region I.

Class 4A

1.

Hereford

2.

Richardson Pearce

3.

Austin Lake Travis

4.

Magnolia

5.

Red Oak

6.

Dallas Highland Park

7.

Canyon Randall

8.

Dripping Springs

9.

Brenham

10.

Dumas

Comments: Interesting goings on in West Texas where rumored player moves could push Randall in front of Hereford.  Until they start playing, the Herd is number one with lots of challenges from Austin Lake Travis, Dripping Springs, Highland Park and strong squads from Brenham and Steele.  Should be wide open early but hard to go against West Texas in the finals.  Richardson Pearce is loaded with returning starters while Highland Park is solid despite the graduation of Katherine Culwell.  The Scots return Margeaux Mendenhall and Tori Freeman and should be very good.  Red Oak has a new coach but lots of returning talent while Frisco Liberty may be ready to break into the top ten.

Class 5A

1.

Amarillo

2.

Austin Westlake

3.

League City Clear Creek

4.

San Antonio Reagan

5.

Fort Bend Travis

6.

Plano East

7.

San Antonio O'Connor

8.

Cypress Woods

9.

A&M Consolidated

10.

Lake Highlands

Comments: Boring, for the past four years I have had either Westlake or Amarillo as number one and the other as number two but until someone beats them when it matters, they remain positioned.   Both teams lost key players but Jan Barker and Al Bennett have overcome the odds before.  Region IV looks very strong with three great San Antonio schools (Reagan, Churchill and O’Connor) and Clark is not far back.  Region III is looking for their first title in a decade and has lots of talent but spread amongst several schools.  The Katy ISD has six or seven D1 standouts while Fort Bend has as many but in the past several years they have not been able to get the brass ring in the state tournament.  Lake Highlands was hit hard by graduation but should be solid while Plano East looks good early.
