2009 Texas Girls Coaches Association Volleyball Poll
November 15, 2009, State Tournament Week

    Class 1A

  1. Lindsay
  2. Louise
  3. Bronte
  4.

Normangee

  5.

Cayuga

  6. Wink
  7. Shiner
  8. Iola
  9. Detroit
  10. Evant

SUMMARY: No Windthorst and no Round Top Carmine, it will be a different state tournament this year.  Louise and Lindsay have been in the limelight all year while Bronte is a traditional West Texas power and Normangee has gotten red hot at the right time.
Should win: Lindsay
Don’t be surprised if they win: Louise
Good enough to win: Bronte and Normangee
Surprised not to be at state: Windthorst (who else ?)

  Class 2A

  1. White Oak
  2.

Poth

  3. Peaster
  4. Aubrey
  5.. Denver City
  6. Centerville
  7. Quitman
  8. Freer
  9. Bushland
  10. Alpine

SUMMARY: Unbeaten White Oak and long time power Poth are in as are Peaster and Aubrey.  Peaster’s win over Denver City was a five game win ending an amazing streak by Denver City that saw them knock off defending champion Bushland and state ranked Nocona before losing to Denver City.
Should win: White Oak
Don’t be surprised if they win: Poth
Good enough to win: Peaster and Aubrey
Surprised not to be at state: Bushland

  Class 3A

  1. Lucas Lovejoy
  2. Monahans
  3. Wimberley
  4. Caldwell
  5. Fredericksburg
  6. Texarkana Pleasant Grove
  7. Mexia
  8. Abilene Wylie
  9. Needville
  10. Prosper

SUMMARY: Is this a great field or what, defending champion Lucas Lovejoy, Wimberley, Monahans and Caldwell have combined to win nine of the last 13 Class 3A titles and if you throw in Bellville it covers every 3A title since 1995.  Lovejoy is the odds on favorite but with a field like this, it’s wide open.
Should win: Lucas Lovejoy
Don’t be surprised if they win: Wimberley
Good enough to win: Caldwell and Monahans.
Surprised not to be at state: Columbus

  Class 4A

  1. Richardson Pearce
  2. Canyon Randall
  3. Brenham
  4. Seguin
  5. Red Oak
  6. Hereford
  7. Lake Travis
  8. Montgomery
  9. Friendswood
  10. Frisco Centennial

SUMMARY: The big surprise came in Region 4 as Robin Gerlich has guided the Seguin Lady Matadors into the state tournament for the first time.  Actually Gerlich was plowing new fields after the Matadors beat Hutto in regional quarterfinals.  Richardson Pearce and Canyon Randall have been eyeing a potential block buster match all year while Brenham is a superb ball handling bunch.
Should win: Richardson Pearce
Don’t be surprised if they win: Canyon Randall
Good enough to win: Brenham
Good, but it would really be an upset if they win: Seguin
Surprised not to be at state: Lake Travis.

  Class 5A

  1. Amarillo
  2. Austin Westlake
  3. Katy Cinco Ranch
  4. Georgetown
  5. Round Rock Westwood
  6. San Antonio O'Connor
  7. Houston Stratford
  8. Flower Mound Marcus
  9. Lewisville Hebron
  10. San Antonio Reagan

SUMMARY: Tradition.  Not really a surprise, we find Amarillo and Westlake, again in the semifinals with a very strong Katy Cinco Ranch team and a mega-surprise in Georgetown.  Amarillo is the three time champion and experience matters at this level.
Should win: Amarillo
Don’t be surprised if they win: Westlake
Good enough to win: Katy Cinco Ranch.
Good, but it would really be an upset if they win: Georgetown
Surprised not to be at state: San Antonio Reagan.
